Tomlin Residence

Master chef. Master bathroom.

Liam Tomlin

INTERVIEW

When tasked with reimagining the bathrooms of a modern home, Natalie Bulwer Interiors embraced a bold brief: to use the elegance of traditionally styled bathroom fittings with a distinctly modern sensibility. The result is a series of spaces where soft and classical forms are juxtaposed with sleek contemporary lines, creating a layered and deeply compelling visual narrative.

Central to the bathrooms were oval counter-mounted basins, a feature the client considered essential, contrasted with bespoke ceramic vanities as functional statement pieces. This desire to balance historical elegance with modern design informed every decision that followed.

This project, a complete remodelling of kitchen, living areas and bathrooms, was nominated as a finalist in the 2024 International Design Awards for the Best Global Interior Design Scheme.

Liam’s kitchen at home is quite dramatic, clad in black stone tiles with stainless steel tops and a truly impressive huge black stove by Gullo, standing proud as the centre piece. Contrasting black industrial steel framed panels off-set the white walls, while wood panelling and flooring offer a warm foil in the living areas. The space is a canvas for their eclectic collection of art, books and furniture that reflect the character of the couple.

The upstairs bedroom is a consolidation of several smaller rooms, flowing easily into the outdoor space. Facing the other way the room is open to the bathroom, divided only by the black steel framework of the large walk-in shower.

BRITANNIA COLLECTION

We are thrilled that Liam & Jan selected our tap-ware, basins and accessories for their bathrooms. The Tomlins and their design team have absolutely nailed the modern classic look that we love so much.

Black metalwork and detailing frame our Britannia Thermostatic shower mixer, mounted on fired white tiles with black grout for contrast while our Burlington Basin mounted on its chrome stand has pride of place just alongside. While this basin stand is quite classic in style it lives comfortably alongside the more industrial chic finishes surrounding it.

The Designer’s Approach - Setting the Tone

At the heart of the design approach was the use of rich, patterned ceramics for the vanities; vibrant surfaces that immediately draw the eye and set the tone for each bathroom. These bold vanities act as a contemporary counterpoint to more traditional fixtures like basins and sanitary ware.

To soften the visual transitions between old and new, warm wooden flooring was extended from adjoining rooms into the bathrooms, creating a sense of cohesion.

The result is a seamless integration of modern minimalism and traditional refinement.

Just above the basin they have featured our beautiful beveled Stockholm swivel mirror, which dips up or down to achieve the best angle. The mirror and basin stand is framed by two of our rather special Koh-I-Noor rotating polished stainless steel shelving units.

The end-result is a homely yet spa-like atmosphere that is soothing and dramatic at the same time. The team at Victorian Bathrooms is proud to be part of this lovely home.
